Portfolios
Qi Dong (2008)
Do we find the things that give life meaning, or do they find us? I walked down big and small streets, new and old. Did I find the calligraphy shop, or did it find me? Qi is energy…Dong is East…this was my street…a rooftop apartment, up in the sky, brush qua lightning rod, temporary custodian of the energy of the East.
Ji Nan (2009)
What is a home, really? It is the place that nestles you…it has ancient, red metal doors…you climb three flights of stairs…you open a heavy door and enter Ji Nan Studio. You will work here for several years, deepening you sense of purpose whilst soaring, bird and shadow.
Life Sentence
(2009-2011)
Life Sentence started as a literary project…sitting in a cafe at night in the moon’s shadow of Taipei 101—the tallest building in the world at that time—it occurred to me to write the world’s longest sentence. This formed the script for the visual operatics of Life Sentence.
Norton (2012)
So…the image to the right is neither Norton, proper, nor calligraphy…per se. However, it is Norton adjacent (at my high school) and it is calligraphic, conceptually. As I pole vaulted poorly, I was metamorphosing…I became, in a way, the animated character of calligraphy itself…the pole becomes the brush that inverts—nay, transposes art and the artist…in its pit, it is arrested…above…I, calligraphy.
Stevens (2013-2014)
Stevens is another permanent portfolio of calligrapher Kevin Brown…the studio was in his first ever owned condominium…the den became the studio…in this image, the calligrapher created the double-directional brush to mark on the paper and on the person simultaneously…equating art and self yet again.
Spurgeon (2019-2026)
Spurgeon is the current studio and sixth permanent portfolio of calligrapher Kevin Brown. In it, the calligrapher has continued practices that ‘embody’ art as transformational…the mobius series is adapted to ink; squares are explored as portal-correlatives; working from within a duvet cover explores creative self-birth and nods to Melville’s White Jacket…and more.

It really doesn’t matter whether you think you are a calligrapher or not because you are… walking is destination-driven dancing, and the gyrometrics of thought create n-grams, or the fingerprints of the soul…these are your calligraphy. So please join.
